Costco Wholesale arrived in 2009 when they opened their first Australian warehouse in Melbourne, followed by Sydney. The ensuing decade saw them expand to Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane and Ipswich with another due to open in Perth by 2020.
Costco operates on a membership and bulk-buy retail model, where customers must pay up to $60 for annual membership to shop. In turn, Costco offers wholesale prices that are about 15% to 20% cheaper than their rivals. Their warehouses are almost three times larger than a typical supermarket but with less product lines, meaning Costco is ideal for bulk-buying by large families or small businesses.
Their featured products include grocery items, beverages, home appliances, sporting goods, electronics, office supplies, books, cosmetics, clothing, hardware, jewellery and more. In addition, Costco offers an Optical Centre, Hearing Aid Centre, Tyre Centre and Fuel Station at select warehouses.
