TO HELP AVOID
HAY FEVER
Did you know 1 in 5 Australians experience hay
fever*? It always astounds me how many people
suffer through hay fever and allergy symptoms -
especially at this time of year, knowing how many
effective treatments and approaches can help!
So, l'll let you in on a little secret that could make
all the difference to managing your hay fever
dual product therapy.
1. Pollen prediction: Check the pollen forecast daily, and try to avoid
heading outside when the pollen count is high – this is usually in
the mornings, early evenings, when it's windy or after a storm.
2. Shower time: Shower off after being outdoors, ensuring you give
your hair, face and body a good scrub to remove any excess pollen
you've picked up. Don't forget to deposit dirty clothes straight in
the laundry hamper.
3. Laundry Day: Avoid hanging sheets on high pollen count days, as
they may bring extra pollen into your bedroom and house.
Dry laundry on a clothes airer or in a tumble dryer.
4. Pet patrol: They may be cute and cuddly, but pets often carry
allergens in their fur that flare-up hay fever. It may help to keep
pets outside, or bath them weekly if they live inside. Řemember to
wash hands immediately after petting animals.
5. Vaseline trap: Dabbing a little Vaseline around
before you leave the house can work as a barier balm, catching
any pollen before you breathe it in. Yet another reason we love
Vaseline!
Dual product therapy or 'combination therapy' is
a pharmacist favourite in treating hay fever. Lots of
allergy products are formulated to target specific
symptoms like itchy eyes or a runny nose. But
when you combine two or more complementary
therapies, it harnesses the power of multiple
products to provide more effective (and sometimes
longer-lasting) relief of symptoms. For example, an
antihistamine tablet by itself might clear up some
mild symptoms, but when you combine this with
a corticosteroid nasal spray, and antihistamine eye
drops, you may find the multiple symptoms you are
experiencing are better targeted from all sides.
Of course when it comes to hay fever,
prevention is better than a cure and there's a
few things you can do to help prevent hay fever:
your
nostrils
• Check the pollen count before leaving the house
• Avoid common hay fever triggers, where possible
• Wash your hands often, especially after touching
6. Flower power: There's a reason bees love them as much as we do;
flowers are full of pollen! Opt for artificial or dried flowers instead to
keep your house bright and the hay fever symptoms at bay.
7. House fairy: Vacuum regularly and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth
to avoid any allergens floating around.
animals or flowers
• Avoid rubbing irritated areas as it can increase
inflammation and make symptoms worse
• Try a daily saline
rinse to keep sinuses clear
It's important to always discuss with your pharmacist
what dual product therapies are right for you as
some require careful use. Ask your local TerryWhite
Chemmart pharmacist about dual product therapy.
