HAY FEVER
LOVE A CURRY?
It could help with your hay fever ...
recent studies indicate the active
ingredient 'curcumin' found in
turmeric (a yellow spice widely used
in curries) may inhibit the release of
'histamine' in the body (which causes
an allergic reaction) and help reduce
symptoms'. Next time you're cooking,
reach for the turmeric!

How to treat allergies
When allergies strike, we may experience multiple symptoms all at once (e.g. itchy
eyes, itchy throat and sneezing). Sound familiar? Because of this, pharmacists often
suggest 'dual product therapy', which combines two or more complementary products
to target different allergy symptoms and provide the best relief. Speak to your
pharmacist about what dual support is right for you'.
• Corticosteriod nasal sprays: Considered one of the most effective treatments for
long-term preventative use, these provide relief from common allergy symptoms
by reducing inflammation in the lining of the nose.
• Antihistamine tablets: These reduce or block histamines, relieving symptoms of
different types of allergies, including seasonal (hay fever), indoor and food allergies.
• Antihistamine eye drops: Similar relief to tablet or syrup antihistamines, these
block histamines in the body and quickly reduce symptoms like itchy, watery eyes.
• Decongestant sprays: Providing fast relief, these help in reducing nasal
congestion and sinus pressure by blocking histamines, and however pharmacist
dosage advice should be followed as they can cause rebound nasal congestion if
used longer than 4-5 days in a row.
Decongestant tablets: Oral decongestants are another alternative, but won't
cause rebound nasal congestion.
• Natural products: Natural saltwater (saline) nasal sprays may clear nasal passage
congestion and wash out allergens (e.g. dust and pollen).
