Real talk My tips for healthier skin this winter Winter can play havoc on our skin - lower temperatures and high winds can strip our skin of its natural oils and moisture and leave it feeling dry, rough and tight. It can also flare up common skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. At this time of year, we see lots of people turning to pharmacies for products that will protect their skin. Considering skin is our body's largest organ*, it's important to care for it. That's why I've pulled together some of my favourite go-to tips for helping to keep skin hydrated and healthier during the cooler months. 1. Hydration. When you consider roughly 60% of our body is comprised of water, it makes sense why we need to hydrate constantly. Water aids in digestion, cushions joints and organs, and helps regulate our temperature." Remember to keep those fluids up, aiming for around 6-8 cups (1.5-2L) of water per day. 2. Turn down the heat. Who doesn't love a hot shower in winter? But this can irritate the keratin cells on the outer layers, resulting in dry and itchy skin which is harder to retain moisture.? Lukewarm water is better for showers and handwashing. 3. Exfoliate. Clear away dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliant. The smoother the skin's surface, the deeper a moisturiser can penetrate. This brings me to my next tip... 4. Moisturise. Moisturising helps lock moisture in, prevent damage to the skin's barrier and keep the skin smooth. To lock extra moisture in, try moisturising damp skin straight after a shower using a heavier moisturiser. Speak to your pharmacist about what product may suit your particular skin needs best. 5. Sunscreen. This is a must every day, all year-round. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun don't just damage the skin, but can prematurely age it and may turn into cancer.? Remember to wear a broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen and cover up if heading out. At TerryWhite Chemmart, we specialise in the skin you're in, and have a range of products for different skin conditions or general skin health. Speak to your local TerryWhite Chemmart pharmacist about your skin, and what products may be right for you. 1.6 million Salma George Pharmacist TerryWhite Chemmart Woodcraft Plaza & Woodcroft Town Centre Australians live with Psoriasis* Source *: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/skin-1 A: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/what-percentage-of-the-human- body-is-water # https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/how-much-water-should-you-drink 1: https://www.healthline.com/health/cold-shower-vs-hot-shower#Whydo-we-like- hot-showers? 2: https://www.cancer 3: https://www.nivea.com.au/advice/skin AA: https://www.healthline.com/health/body-water-percentage
