GIFT GUIDE
LIFE,
CAMERA,
ACTION!
One of the most popular things
for adventurous types to carry in
the backpack is a quality action
camera – a type of camera that’s
revolutionised how we’re able to
shoot video of our adventures.
These compact and easy to use
cameras shoot both video and
stills, but unlike conventional
cameras, they’re designed to
be taken anywhere. The best
ones are resistant to all kinds
of punishment, some even
completely waterproof. Their
small size and durability doesn’t
compromise picture quality, which
can be stunning – and these are
cameras that can go places you’d
never take your phone!

JB’s Top Tips
While they’re incredibly durable,
if you’re going to use your action
camera to capture extreme
adventure, get a protective
housing for it.
PICK UP: An extra battery and a
charger to keep shooting for longer.
If you’re planning to put yourself on camera for either a live streaming audience or for videos you’re
creating, you’re going to want people to see you in your best light – literally. The reason presenters
on TV look so good is thanks to proper lighting, and you can get the same sort of result at home by
adding lighting to your setup as well. The fastest way to looking amazing on camera is a ring light,
which is great for lighting up faces without casting shadows – there’s a reason why ring lights are
used all the time in the modelling world! An alternative is a key light, which delivers more even
illumination for when it’s more than just your face on camera.

JB’s Top Tips
If you’re going for a full-size mic when you’ll be on camera, it’s a good idea to use a boom arm to keep
the mic near you but out of the camera’s zoom.
There’s no need to talk directly into most mics – they’ll capture your voice just fine.
PICK UP: A pop filter to put between you and the mic for better voice quality.
