Try stylist Jessi Eve’s suggestions for creating
your own inexpensive artworks
Arm yourself with rope, wool, driftwood and
dowel to craft a piece. “You can find tutorials and
inspiration online featuring these materials which,
with some creativity, can easily be customised to
suit your space and style,” she says.
Turn a scrap of wallpaper, gift-wrap or fabric
into a focal point by framing it in a shadow box.
Play around with typography, such as a printed
affirmation or personalised name in your favourite
font, and set it in a simple slim black frame.
Create your own abstract masterpiece on
canvas, using colours that complement your
interior. For a textural piece, experiment by
adding joint compound to paint and then
spreading with a palette knife.

HANG ARTWORK ON PLASTERBOARD
When there is no wall
stud exactly where you
need it, use an anchor
for hollow plasterboard.
Remember to check it
is appropriate for the
weight of the picture.

1 Use a sensor to double
check there is no stud where
the picture will hang. Apply
tape on the wall along the
top of the frame and mark
the centre. Pull the middle
of the picture wire up with
a measuring tape to find
the distance to the top of
frame. On the wall, transfer
this down from the tape.

2 Place the hook on the mark
to indicate the hole above
it. Put the hook over the
anchor, push the point onto
the top mark and use a
screwdriver to twist it into the
wall. Finish with the anchor
flush against the wall. Hang
the picture, checking the
frame is straight with a level,
adjusting as needed.
On studs: Pre-drill
through the
plasterboard and
into the timber with
a 3.5mm bit and
drive in a 10G x
50mm screw, leaving
it protruding about
5mm for hanging.
On masonry: Use
a hammer action
to pre-drill the hole
with a 5mm masonry
bit, then install a
14G x 55mm masonry
screw using a normal
drilling action, leaving
it protruding.
