The backyard presents a wonderful opportunity
to create a haven at home. Make the most of your areas
outside with furniture and accessories that encourage you
to kick back and relax year-round.
Initial considerations
Your choices will be influenced by available space, but
also by how much time you plan to spend outdoors, and
how many people the zone needs to accommodate.
What would you like to use the area for – are you big
entertainers who need a generous dining table, and
space to cook? Do you want to extend your living space
outside with comfy sofas and chairs, or do you envisage
casual meals perched on stools around a bar table?
Size up your space
The dimensions and shape of your area will influence
your options. A deep deck is ideal for a social set-up with
adjacent sofas and a coffee table, while a slender patio
might suit a quiet retreat with a daybed and side table.
If you’re pushed for space, opt for the items you’ll
use the most. A lounge setting, for example, might
be just the ticket if you like to entertain – add in a
coffee table for casual dining. A round table with
armless chairs can be great for a smaller zone,
while bench seats can often squeeze on an extra
body when needed. Just add bench cushions for
added comfort!
Is your area undercover or out in the open? Think
about sun and wind exposure, privacy and which
direction the rain often comes from, remembering
that the wind could blow around lightweight pieces,
and certain materials, like timber, will weather over
time so may need some regular TLC.
Find the right style
To ensure your alfresco areas are in keeping with
your home’s overall style, choose similar materials
and colours to the interiors, creating interest and
personality with soft furnishings and accessories. For
classic homes and cottage gardens, add comfort
with wicker sofas teamed with neutral cushions and
floral fabrics and textural rugs. For a more holiday/
resort feel, use coastal-style outdoor furniture, for
example wicker and solid, timeless teak pieces, with
fabrics in neutrals and whites plus a dash of blue.
Combining a variety of textures and hues can have
great impact, but include a common linking element
for a harmonious result. Overall, your selection of
different items comes down to personal preference
and the look you’re after.
Material considerations
When comparing different materials, consider
style, durability and ease of maintenance.
Wicker Suits an array of looks from modern to
classic country and Hamptons-inspired spaces.
Polyethylene versions have similar good looks but
the added advantage of weather and UV resistance.
Rattan Beachy, boho and casual. However it does
need to be protected from the weather.
Teak For those who love the natural beauty of
timber, it’s hard to beat strong, durable teak.
Regular TLC will maintain its good looks, but it also
weathers to an attractive, natural grey.
Eucalyptus Not as dense as teak, but still a fairly
durable hardwood. Oil it regularly for longevity.
Acacia An affordable option for the budget
conscious, acacia requires on-going upkeep and is
best used undercover to preserve its good looks.
Aluminium Rust, water and mould resistant, and
available in various powder-coated colour options,
lightweight aluminium suits a chic modern look. It’s
also easy to maintain with a quick wipe down.
